Data & Methods

How the Matched Map Was Built

Data Center Sites

The site layer includes 1,472 unique data-center records from the IM3 Open Source Data Center Atlas v2026.02.09, covering the 48 contiguous states and the District of Columbia.

Contextual Data

The map combines demographic and socioeconomic data from the American Community Survey, social vulnerability from CDC/ATSDR SVI, environmental indicators from EPA EJScreen, 1991-2020 climate normals from NOAA, and state electricity data from EIA.

Geographic Matching

Each data center was linked by location to its Census tract, ZIP Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA), metropolitan statistical area (MSA), and state. The MSA view includes metropolitan statistical areas only.

Geographic Summaries

For each selected level and theme, the map reports data-center count, mapped area, and matched contextual values. Mapped area is the recorded polygon area in square feet, not internal floor area or computing capacity. ACS values are reported for the selected geography. SVI is summarized using tract population-weighted means, EJScreen using population-weighted block-group means, climate from matched weather stations, and electricity from state profiles.
